2009 Australian Senior Men’s Curling Championships

The same weekend of the Mixed Doubles championship – the Senior Men’s championship was being contested as well.

With only 2 teams in a double knock-out format when a team has it’s second win they will be the champions.

Team Millikin won their first two games over Team Thomas in score lines of 8-0 and 11-3.

This earns Millikin the tri-fecta of winning the Men’s, Mixed Doubles and Senior Men’s curling championships for 2009.  The World Senior Curling Championship will be taking place at Chelyabinsk, Russia in April 2010.

Congrats Hugh and Team and good luck in Russia.

2009 Australian Mixed Doubles Championships Results

Sept 24th to 27th saw the Australian Mixed Doubles (MD) Championships hosted at the Maniototo Curling International rink in Naseby, New Zealand.

The event was Triple knock out, with a winner of the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ events qualifying for the playoffs.

Team Lyn Gil & Steve Johns won both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ events, with Kim Forge & Hugh Millikin 2010-Cheyabinskwinning the ‘C’ event.  This put pressure on the Forge/Millikin duo needing to win both playoff games to claim the championship.

The complete score lines are below, and indeed Kim and Hugh will be representing Australia at the World Mixed Double Championships at Chelyabinsk, Russia after a couple of wins on the Finals day.

2009 Australian National Curling Championships Schedule

The weekend of June 5 – 7 Australia will be conducting the National Curling Championships in Dunedin, New Zealand.  With no dedicated curling facilities in Australia – having the competition in Dunedin is the closest rink to Australia and will provide a fantastic venue.  The Dunedin rink just finished hosting the World Senior Curling Championships a couple of months ago (the first time a World Curling Championship has been held in the Southern Hemisphere)

With only one team entered for the Women’s, Jr. Women’s, and Jr. Men’s they are all taking the opportunity to train in Dunedin and play some exhibition games.

There are 3 Men’s team entries – Team Hugh Millikin, Team Dave Thomas and Team Matt Panoussi.  We will be playing a triple knockout event to decide the winner.  The draw is included below (click the graphic to view it full size).

The winner of a National Championships earns the spot as the National Team for 2009/2010 for international events such as the Pacific Championships and the New Zealand Winter Games.

For the Men’s and Women’s the Pacific's will be held in Karuizawa, Japan – where the 1998 Olympic’s were held.

I’ll attempt to keep the results updated on this blog as the weekend progresses.

Australian Men's Champions - 2007
The men's curling team (Hugh Millikin, Ian Palangio, Sean Hall and Steve Johns) just returned from our 2007 National Men's Curling Championships.

They are played in an old derelict arena in Bendigo, Victoria - a couple of hour drive North of Melbourne.  Tricky conditions to curl on - where throwing the right handle isn't always important :)

After a round robin, and a couple of nerve racking games for the Semi and Final - we emerged victorious.

Our next competition is the Pacific Curling Championships in Beijing, China.  Should be interesting as they are likely in full Olympic swing in Beijing with the upcoming summer games.  The Pacific's are in late November with the finals on the weekend of November 24th.
