Updated WCF Anti-Doping Rules

Following changes to the World Anti-Doping Code, the WCF Anti-Doping Rules introduced in July 2004, have been amended, we’ve included a copy on this website for reference: WCFAnti-Doping Rules09.

These new rules become effective from 1 January 2009 and must be formally accepted at the WCF General Assembly in Ornskoldsvik on 8 December 2008.

Most of the content is mandatory and the guidelines issued by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have been closely followed.  There were very few optional areas, but adaptions were required to suit individual sports.  These rules as published have now been finally approved by WADA.

Major Amendments to the 2004 version are as follows:

Article 4.4.3

Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) for certain asthma related medications not required in advance of testing for athletes not in a Registered Testing Pool.

Article 5.5.1

Mandatory Whereabouts requirements for International athletes on the WCF Registered Testing Pool (RTP), filing of quarterly reports, and 60 minutes per day availability for testing.

Article 10.3-10.5

Greater flexibility in the application of sanctions

- Increases for serious cases i.e. multiple offences.

- Relaxed sanctions, including warnings where no evidence of a deliberate offence exists.

Brazil to Challenge for America's Spot in World Championships

A while ago I blogged about how Olympic qualification for countries in the sport of curling works ->  Olympic Qualification Summary

In that summary, I talked about how there is 12 places at the World Championships for countries based out of three Regions.

World Curling Region # Spots at Worlds
America's 2
Europe 8
Pacific 2

For many years the America's countries have had a free ride to the World Championships with only 2 countries (Canada and USA) competing for 2 spots.  It was always expected that some day more countries would become active in the America's.

I see on the World Curling Federation website that Brazil is now adding itself to the mix this year.  This means that there will now be a challenge to determine the 2 countries out of 3 possible.  In a similar manner to the European and Pacific Championships - there will now have to be an America's Championship.  It's another sign of the growth and development of the sport - and how it's really capturing the imagination of countries and sports people around the globe.   Did you know that curling is the fastest growing Winter Sport?

Because Canada is hosting the World Curling Championships for Men this year in Moncton, NB they get an automatic spot in the World Championships as the host.  This means it will actually be Brazil and USA playing off for the second America's spot.

Apparently the Brazilian team lives in Canada - so it will be interesting to see what kind of competition they can provide.  Hopefully they make a good run at it and capture a lot of attention.

So - USA and Canada no more free ride for you!

Cheers
